"Negro" By Langston Hughes

I am a Negro:
Black as the night is black,
Black like the depths of my Africa.

I’ve been a slave:
Caesar told me to keep his door-steps clean.
I brushed the boots of Washington.

I’ve been a worker:
Under my hand the pyramids arose.
I made mortar for the Woolworth Building.

I’ve been a singer:
All the way from Africa to Georgia
I carried my sorrow songs.
I made ragtime.

I’ve been a victim:
The Belgians cut off my hands in the Congo.
They lynch me still in Mississippi.

I am a Negro:
Black as the night is black,
Black like the depths of my Africa.

This is an outstanding poem indeed. Not only African-Americans have suffered throughout history, but as an African-Brazilian I can say that lots of unspeakable things happend to black slaves in my country. This poem is for all those people with African roots who know prejudice is still part of our days. This a great poem that will endure for years to come.

Turkish Delight from Narnia - What is it?

In honor of the "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" movie, I thought I would write about Turkish Delight….

I've just read the first book of the "Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis and I can say it's really a magic story. Recently I've decided to get "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" audiobook. I love that story. It brings back such vivid memories of my innocent  childhood. Well, as I was listening to the audiobook I wondered about the candy that the White Witch gave to Edmund to convince him to be on her side. I always just assumed it was a made-up candy like most things in Narnia. It turns out Turkish Delight is a real candy and there are many recipes for it online.

Here is one of these recipes:

Ingredients:
3 cups water
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons gelatine
1 1⁄2 cups icing sugar, sifted
2⁄3 cup cornflour
1⁄4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1⁄2 teaspoon rose water
Few drops pink food colouring 3⁄4 cup icing sugar, sifted

Method
1. Combine water, sugar and gelatine in a large microwave safe dish.
2. Microwave on high for 7 minutes. Stir well cook for a further 7 minutes. 3. Combine icing sugar, cornflour and cream of tartar.
4. Stir into sugar syrup.
5. Microwave on high power for another 6 minutes.
6. Blend in the rose water and colouring.
7. Pour into lightly oiled 18 x 28 cm lamington tin.
8. Refrigerate until firm.
9. Cut into small logs using a wet knife.
10. Toss in icing sugar.
11. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

You can download "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" ebook from this site: http://www.epubbud.com/book.php?g=4NPMSCAAz I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!! ;-]

Imagine

(By: Peter Street - LazerFX@ntlworld.com)

Imagine there's no Windows,
It's easy if you try,
No bugs annoy us,
Completely free to try.
Imagine all the people
giving code away...

Imagine there's no companies,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to hack or crack for,
No UNIX too,
Imagine all the people
giving code away...

Imagine no computers,
I wonder if you can,
No need for geek or hacker,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a loonie,
But I'm not the only one.
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
