In honor of the "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" movie, I thought I would write about Turkish Delight….
I've just read the first book of the "Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis and I can say it's really a magic story. Recently I've decided to get "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" audiobook. I love that story. It brings back such vivid memories of my innocent childhood. Well, as I was listening to the audiobook I wondered about the candy that the White Witch gave to Edmund to convince him to be on her side. I always just assumed it was a made-up candy like most things in Narnia. It turns out Turkish Delight is a real candy and there are many recipes for it online.
Here is one of these recipes:
Ingredients:
3 cups water
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons gelatine
1 1⁄2 cups icing
sugar, sifted
2⁄3 cup cornflour
1⁄4 teaspoon cream of
tartar
1⁄2 teaspoon rose
water
Few drops pink food
colouring 3⁄4 cup icing sugar, sifted
Method
1. Combine water, sugar
and gelatine in a large microwave safe dish.
2. Microwave on high
for 7 minutes. Stir well cook for a further 7 minutes. 3. Combine
icing sugar, cornflour and cream of tartar.
4. Stir into sugar
syrup.
5. Microwave on high
power for another 6 minutes.
6. Blend in the rose
water and colouring.
7. Pour into lightly
oiled 18 x 28 cm lamington tin.
8. Refrigerate until
firm.
9. Cut into small logs
using a wet knife.
10. Toss in icing
sugar.
11. Store in an
airtight container in the refrigerator.
